On Sunday 23rd September we welcomed members of the Queensland Tentpegging Association Sue and Taylah Smith, Arthur DeMain and Bill, to give Karana Downs Members and Guest instruction in the fun and exciting discipline of Tentpegging.
All in attendance had a great fun and sometimes quite entertaining day; we started the day with an unmounted History, Demonstration, and Safety Brief. Once mounted again we practiced the Drills we were shown, and then were split pairs to start having runs at the peg’s. This bought out the best and entraining sides of our clubs horses (Sabrina…..). By the end of the morning session, we all had either got a peg or got very close with lot of encouragement and support from the sidelines.
After lunch, we had a run at 1 part of the Skill at Arms course where you jump a small jump while popping a balloon with a “pistol” (made of wood with a large nail in the end) at the same time. It was mostly the riders worried about the balloons not the horses and another fun and entertaining session ensured with all riders get one or more of the balloons each run.
Big thank you the Richelle’s two girls Alannah and Mahalah along with Rachel’s Jordan for blowing up all the balloons just so they could be popped a few minutes later.
As Tentpegging is a Pony club approved discipline, we are looking at the possibility of entering a couple of teams in the next year Queensland Tentpegging Association’s Championships in July. Bill who was our main instructor and is also a Tentpegging judge has offered to come back and help us get ready for the championships. Having attended this competition this year up at Caboolture Showgrounds I can assure you, it is a fun, supportive and exciting weekend.
Although this is around July next year if we do want to put some team forward for it we will need to start getting names and horses sorted as this is a team event the horse must be able to move as a section of four horse at walk, trot, canter and if able controlled gallop. Therefore, have a think and let either Richelle or Myself Know if you are interested.
